How Does Your State Lottery Payout Percentage Stack Up against Some Of the Highest in The Country?

Okay, so when put this blog post together, I didn’t want you to get the wrong idea. You are not necessarily going to become a millionaire from reading this post.

Again, you ARE NOT necessarily going to become a millionaire from reading this post.

However, research does suggest that some state lottery players historically fair better than players in other states. In some cases, the percentages are quite surprising.

In this post, I’m going to share with you a few states where players enjoy higher than average returns on their lottery “investments.”

Also, we’re not necessarily talking about winning the major games like Mega Millions and Powerball (although winners of both have come from these states).

If you want to jump online and try your luck with these state lotteries, that’s entirely up to you. But don’t complain to me if your luck winds up being no better than it is now.

Let’s begin:

At number 5 on this list is Arizona. Arizona offers over 48 different types of lottery games, including the two biggest drawings. Also, this is a scratch-off card player’s paradise with multiple cards offering million-dollar jackpots. About 71% of the money spent on lottery games is paid out in prizes in the state of Arizona.

At number 4, we come to Arkansas. This state has over 40 instant win scratch-off games that pay from $1.00 up to $1 million. In addition to the Powerball and Mega Millions, the Arkansas state lottery offers four other lottery-style games. 73% of all of the money spent on lottery games in this state gets paid out in winnings.

At number 3, we travel to the state of Massachusetts. The Massachusetts lottery offers 8 lottery-style games, including the seldom offered game of Keno.  Additionally, you’ll choose from a whopping 120 different types of scratch-off and instant-win games. Many people have won in Massachusetts. A total of 74% of all money collected by the state lottery gets paid back to its players.

At number 2, we’ll creep one percentage point higher than Massachusetts when we arrive at North Dakota. The North Dakota state lottery is different from the others on this list because no scratch-offs of any kind are offered. Yet the percentage of winning payouts is the second highest in the country.  Multiple millionaires have come out of North Dakota. 2021 saw several Powerball winners and one cash-for-life winner come from this state. North Dakota pays about 75% of its money collected to lottery winners in this state.

And finally, at number 1, we arrive in Idaho. Idaho has the highest winning percentages of any state in the country. Due in part to the low costs of overhead and advertising, this state lottery can funnel more funds into the purses of its players. Idaho boasts a staggering 79% winning percentage, which is easily the highest in the country.

Again, I want to reiterate:

Just because you read this, don’t plan on buying a multi-million dollar mansion. But if you do happen to win something after reading this post, then chip me off about 20%.
